Recently, Professor Lim Chwee Teck, Principal Investigator (PI) at the NUS Guangzhou Research Translation and Innovation Institute (NUS GRTII), Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Director of the Institute for Health Innovation & Technology (iHealthtech), and a Fellow of multiple national academies — has received three major honours in succession: the 2026 WACBE Savio L-Y. Woo Distinguished Lecture Award from the World Association for Chinese Biomedical Engineers (WACBE), the ICCES Eric Reissner Medal from the International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Science (ICCES 2026), and the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) at Singapore's 2026 National Day Awards.

These three honours recognise, from the distinct perspectives of biomedical engineering, mechanics and engineering science, and national service, Professor Lim's exceptional contributions to research innovation, academic leadership, translation of research outcomes, and the development of the healthcare technology ecosystem.

First Recipient from Asia

During the 12th WACBE Congress on Bioengineering 2026, held in Changzhou, China, Professor Lim was presented with the WACBE Savio L-Y. Woo Distinguished Lecture Award. Conferred by the World Association for Chinese Biomedical Engineers (WACBE), it is among the highest honours awarded by the association, recognising distinguished scientists who have made pioneering contributions to the field of biomedical engineering and exerted a lasting impact on academic leadership and talent development.

Named in honour of Professor Savio L-Y. Woo, a pioneer in biomechanics and biomedical engineering, the award was established in 2015. Professor Lim is its first recipient from Asia since its inception.

Mechanics Research Contributions Recognised Internationally

Shortly afterwards, Professor Lim was awarded the ICCES Eric Reissner Medal at the 32nd International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Science (ICCES 2026).

Named after Professor Eric Reissner, a renowned scholar in mechanics, the medal recognises researchers who have made outstanding contributions to mechanics and engineering science. This honour further underscores Professor Lim’s deep scholarly expertise and continued influence in the fields of mechanics, mechanobiology, and engineering science.

Singapore National-Level Honour

In August, Singapore announced this year’s National Day Awards recipients. Professor Lim was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Bronze). Established in 1963, the Singapore Public Administration Medal recognises individuals who have rendered distinguished service and outstanding contributions in areas such as public service and education.

Professor Lim has long been dedicated to advancing Singapore’s healthcare technology innovation ecosystem. He actively engages government agencies, medical institutions and industry, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and the translation of research outcomes, and continuously enhancing Singapore’s international standing in healthcare technology innovation. This honour not only recognises his research and academic achievements, but also affirms his contributions to serving the university’s development, advancing healthcare technology innovation, and promoting social progress.

From Frontier Research to Translational Application: Continually Expanding the Boundaries of Healthcare Technology Innovation

Professor Lim is currently the NUSS Chair Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the NUS College of Design and Engineering (CDE) and Director of the Institute for Health Innovation & Technology (iHealthtech). He is also a Fellow of the US National Academy of Engineering, The Royal Society (UK), the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), the Singapore National Academy of Science, and the Academy of Engineering, Singapore.

An internationally recognised pioneer in biomedical engineering, Professor Lim’s research spans mechanobiology, microfluidics, flexible bioelectronics, wearable sensing, and AI-enabled healthcare technologies. He has published over 520 journal papers and delivered more than 550 plenary, keynote, and invited talks worldwide.

Committed to translating research outcomes from the laboratory to clinical and industrial applications, Professor Lim has co-founded six technology companies, one of which achieved a successful IPO in 2018. He and his team have garnered over 100 domestic and international honours — including the President’s Science Award, the President’s Technology Award, and the Nature Lifetime Achievement Award for Mentoring in Science — reflecting his combined impact as a scientist, engineer, innovator, and entrepreneur.

As a PI and PhD supervisor at NUS GRTII, Professor Lim actively participates in the institute’s research innovation and talent development, mentoring its PhD scholarship students in healthcare technology research and exploring new paradigms for future health diagnosis and treatment.
